When Pain Becomes Suffering
This presentation is geared to doulas, childbirth educators, nurses, midwives, or doctors, and may also be helpful to psychotherapists who serve women of childbearing-age.
The OP Fetus: How little we know
The few research studies on measures to rotate the OP fetus to OA before of during labor show low success rates. Penny will describe promising but unresearched measures, and clarify the doula’s role in the face of the discouraging findings.
Post-partum: The neglected phase of childbearing
This presentation covers lifetime factors that influence a woman’s postpartum adjustment and the Big 4 areas of concern in postpartum: Physical recovery, mood disorders, sleep deprivation, and mother-baby attachment, including feeding challenges.
Skills Workshop: Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulator (TENS)*
Penny will present a history of TENS, research findings, and a hands-on demonstration of its use for laboring women. Participants will have the opportunity to use it. Penny will also describe how doulas can offer TENS to their clients and remain within DONA’s scope of practice.
